Find Your Perfect Team

One of the most important decisions you will make during your pregnancy is finding your perfect birth team. In addition to your partner or any friends or family members who will be supporting you emotionally and physically, your team will include the provider you have chosen to care for you during your pregnancy and birth. This provider should take time to listen to all of your needs and preferences, helping you achieve the experience you want as best they can. Labor, birth and the postpartum period can be an extremely vulnerable time, so it’s important to make sure you have the right team by your side through it all.

If you are interested in midwifery care, then you probably already know that midwives facilitate an environment for mothers to make healthy, safe choices based on evidence-based research. They provide hands-on assistance and guidance throughout labor and avoid using unnecessary, invasive procedures. But how will you know if they will be the right birth team for you? Start with asking questions and learning more about how they practice. Here are some things to look for during conversations with different care providers that can help determine whether they will be a good fit for you.

Comfort

One way to know if you have found the right team is by assessing your comfort level when you are with them. Ask yourself, does their presence make you feel at ease?  Do you feel safe and open to share any questions, concerns, or fears you might have?  Does their philosophy about prenatal, birth, and postpartum care align with your own?  If so, it stands to reason that you will be able to trust them with helping you make the best decisions for your care.

Education

Education is a big part of midwifery care. Many practices encourage their clients to attend classes on prenatal nutrition and natural childbirth to help them stay healthy and low-risk and to have a better understanding of what they can expect during labor and delivery. Classes such as these serve to inform, support, and encourage expectant mothers.  Look for a birth team that places a high value on this sort of education.  It is a sign that they want you to feel confident and empowered to make well-educated choices for you and your baby.

Support

Finding a team that makes you feel supported is a great determining factor of whether you will be a good fit for each other. In your interactions with them, you’ll want to feel like you are being heard, seen, and not rushed.  At Celebrate Birth, we understand how important it is for us to truly listen to our clients’ wishes and we strive to help them develop a birth plan that achieves those wishes as safely as possible.  It is our hope that our families feel well-supported throughout their prenatal, birth, and postpartum care.
