We encourage prenatal breastfeeding support, including a 35-week assessment to discuss your history, concerns, and create a personalized feeding plan, regardless of your birth location. Our comprehensive breastfeeding basics class, open to both clients and the community, covers lactation fundamentals and addresses concerns like returning to work, and we provide continuous support from birth through weaning and beyond.
Pregnancy is a powerful act of building. It requires increased protein intake to support the growing uterus. We emphasize nutrient-dense foods and ample hydration, as water plays a crucial role in everything from organ function to maintaining healthy amniotic fluid. Nutritional needs increase during pregnancy because your baby relies on your intake for essential macro and micronutrients, which are vital for their cellular function, growth, and development.

Our birth center offers water birth in two spacious tubs, providing a therapeutic and comforting experience that can significantly ease labor pain and promote muscle relaxation. After your baby's birth, you can remain in the tub as long as you wish while getting skin-to-skin contact, unless rare complications like heavy bleeding arise. If water birth isn't your preference, we also offer the option of laboring in the shower.
During lactation, prioritize nutrient-dense foods to maintain stable blood sugar levels, preventing fatigue and supporting both your energy and rest. These foods provide essential micro and macronutrients for your body's healing and immune system, while also ensuring your baby receives vital antibodies and calories through your milk.
As your labor progresses, maintain close contact with us, especially when contractions become intense, following the 4-1-1 guideline: contractions four minutes apart, lasting one minute, for one hour. Upon arrival, we'll conduct a comprehensive assessment, including vitals and labor progress, and develop a personalized plan, which may involve staying at the birth center, returning home, or remaining for additional support. After birth, we provide continuous monitoring for both mother and baby, including the "golden hour," and ensure stability for a minimum of two hours, with an average stay of three to three and a half hours before discharge.
Precipitous labor occurs when labor and delivery are completed in 3 hours or less from the first contraction. It can be difficult to recognize because the rapid progression may not seem so fast. If your contractions are 2-3 minutes apart, intense, and accompanied by pressure from the very beginning, contact your midwife immediately. These signs often indicate a quick labor and delivery.
Birth assistants play a vital role in supporting the midwife during labor. They ensure the midwife has everything they need and help to maintain a safe environment for the birthing process to unfold smoothly.
While most nutritional needs remain relatively consistent throughout pregnancy, iron requirements increase significantly to support the production of red blood cells for both mother and baby. Caloric needs gradually increase, with minimal changes in the first trimester, moderate increases in the second, and substantial increases in the third trimester. Notably, lactation demands the highest caloric intake, exceeding the requirements for fetal growth.
We offer home births within a 30-minute radius of the birth center. We bring all necessary equipment and develop emergency plans with you ahead of time. This proximity guideline ensures we can quickly reach you should any unforeseen circumstances arise.
We refer to your 36-week appointment as your "birth planning visit." During this appointment, you'll complete a birth certificate worksheet. After delivery, we'll submit the necessary information to the state and provide you with instructions on obtaining your baby's birth certificate. We also submit the application for the social security card concurrently, and it typically arrives within three to four weeks.
If breastfeeding isn’t an option, you can choose donor milk or formula feeding, and we fully support your needs. We’ll help create a safe formula-feeding plan, including tips on paced bottle-feeding, choosing the right bottles, and drying up milk if needed. Additionally, we can work alongside your pediatrician to determine the appropriate formula amounts based on your baby’s weight during a consultation.
