Best Labor Snacks

Some people think it is not safe to eat during labor. There are a few cases in which this may be true, but for the low-risk mothers we accept into our care, it is most certainly a benefit for them to be able to eat during this experience. Labor requires a lot of energy and that in turn requires food! When your body has the proper nutrients to function at its best, it can be easier to avoid complications and unnecessary interventions.

We encourage our families to eat and drink what they can throughout labor and delivery to give them all of the energy and calories they need to deliver their baby. If your care provider gives you the thumbs up to eat during labor, here are a few foods that you can try!

Foods to eat during labor

  • Fruit

High-fat foods can be heavy on the stomach and might make you feel sick. Fruits are light and packed full of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber! Whether you are a berry fan and prefer strawberries or blueberries, or if you’re more of a citrus lover and want oranges, all are great options to keep you feeling strong and energized for your labor.

  • Cheese and Crackers

A popular choice for most when looking for light and easy snacks is cheese and crackers! Crackers are great to help with nausea or when your stomach is just feeling a little off. Adding cheese to the mix adds some calcium and also makes the crackers more satiating.

  • Granola Bars

Finding sources of fiber and carbohydrates is great because they give a slow release of energy which can help you sustain your energy throughout your labor. Granola bars are great for this reason since they are made up of oats, seeds, dried fruit, AND they are already convenient and ready to go at any moment!

Food to avoid during labor

PEA SOUP ? Just kidding! Really, anything that is heavy, greasy, or spicy should be avoided. Some of the best advice is to just listen to your body. You will know what types of foods work best for you and others that you might want to wait until after labor to enjoy.

Having delicious, light foods prepared ahead of time can make it easier for you to grab and enjoy them when the time comes. And don’t forget to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! What is your favorite healthy snack that you would add to the list?
